Adult Sailing
- 2010
Ever wonder what it's like to sail on one of those beautiful boats you
see plying the open waters of Lake Ontario each summer? Now is
your chance to find out.
The Olcott Yacht Club offers adult sailing lessons each season.
The program consists of an introductory lecture, demonstrations ashore
and eight sailing lessons. We meet on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm
and Saturday mornings at 10:00 am for one or two hour sessions depending
on conditions. Classes will begin on Tuesday, May 25th and run
through June 22rd. Lessons are given by certified sailing
instructors and veteran skippers of the OYC racing and cruising fleets,
allowing participants an opportunity to learn on a variety of boats
large and small.
The program is open to members and non-members alike. So join up
and bring a friend!

Sailing

Junior
Sailing began at Olcott Yacht Club in the 1940s with the "OYC
Tiller Jockeys" sailing on Prams and Snipes in that era and
graduating to C&C Nutshells in the 1970s. The program acquired
a fleet of eight JY15 "Jrs" in the late 1980s and '90s.
In 2004 we acquired a fleet of 7 420s from Yale University. In
2007 we extended the 420 fleet to 10 boats.
In
2010 we are extending our 420 fleet to 14, and our Optimist fleet has
been expanded to 7.

The 420 program is open to boys and girls age 9 to 18. It runs six
weeks during the summer, Monday through Friday, on the water, from 10
A.M. till 3 P.M. The "Opti" program, begun 2007, will accept
younger sailors (age 7) and will follow the same schedule.
Several levels of instruction are taught with an emphasis on safety,
fun, sportsmanship, cooperation and competition. 1n 2006 our
advanced racing team was undefeated in several local regattas and won
the Gold Medal at the Rochester Junior Olympics. In 2009 OYC again won
Gold at the Junior Olympics.
The Club uses the US Sailing Association format that offers several
years of developmental skills in, sailing, theory, timing, balance,
racing and seamanship. Classes are kept small with a
student/teacher ratio of less than ten to one.

Acceptance into the program is on a first come/first served basis and is
open to the public and membership alike. Participation is active;
we have had a participation increase of 40% over the past two season.
As a result we have established a deadline date for applications
of June 30, 2010. Please apply at your earliest convenience.
